I'm a bit confused over 'The', I've been pondering over this bit of it for a good two hours now, but I just don't get it. If you could please try to elaborate your meaning a little futher that would be much appreciated.

Right. Well, I haven't been to film school, or even intend to go. I can see how the whole 'learn to do by doing' thing might fit into that, but the bottom line is, anyone who hasn't gone, doesn't know what its like, so if there is a divide about people who haven't gone and think it is crap, and people who did go and think it is grand, then nothing will be resolved. Go for a semester or something and try it out, if you really hate it, quit, but if you really like it, or think you might end up doing so, keep going. Very simple.

If you want to go to film school do. If you dont, then dont. But dont slag of someone who wants to k=take a differant path than you, just because it doesn't suit you, each to there own.
And cozza, Ridley scott directed alien, a classic film (not aliens), but he also directed GI Jane. But he did come back with Gladiator. Point is....?

Just because people have to have a portfolio and prove themselves to get into an institution and therefore only talented people go there, doesn't mean the institution is any good. St Martins has a reputation because at one pint it was good so evryone who was talented went there. It now has a reputation among all other colleges and art folk that it shit. To quote someone who went there- you go in one end and get shat out the other. Lots of people I've spoken to others who also go there now who say they're even thinking of dropping fine art all together, to stick to fashion and media and such. Yet people still apply because of all the famous names that went there decades ago.
Also Shirt, people who don't go to film school use more than camcorders and there backyard.
You sound very defensive about film school for some reason. If people who go to film school are the talented ones who know what they're doing then surely they're the ones who will be making the proffesional films in the future which in my opinion are mostly shit!
